Preventing Fires on a Boat

The one thing you don’t want on your boat is a fire.  I kinda think it’s weird that boats go up so fast in a fire even though they are sitting in water.  You’d think that the water would extinguish the flames. But that’s not what happens, until the boat is already gone.

A lot of boat are made of fiberglass, and fiberglass goes up in an instant when on fire.  What makes the fiberglass so flammable is the resin, or chemical that they use to keep the fiberglass together.

So it’s very important to keep the boat in tip top shape and do safety checks often to make sure there are no accidental fires about to happen.

During one of Stephen’s safety checks, he noticed that our shore power plug was burnt.   Just two weeks before he had plugged us into shore power and the plugs were like new…they actually were only 6 months old.

Something was wrong with the connection that was causing the plug to burn.  After examining the connection, Stephen found that

the positive wire on the boat was badly corroded and needed to be replaced, and a new connection needed to be made.

The bad connection was causing heat, which was melting the shore power plug.

In order to fix this, he cut out the old plug and replaced the wire, and put in a new SmartPlug.

Watch the video here to see how he did it.

Make sure you add checking the shore power plugs to your safety checklist.
